History of Rometron and WEED-IT
25 years of intelligent agricultural solutions.
Rometron’s roots lay in Wageningen, The Netherlands, where its founder and owner Roel de Jonge graduated on spot spraying technology from Wageningen University and Research (WUR) in 1997. He quickly recognised the potential of the technology and started to commercialise it as WEED-IT from 1999 after founding the company Rometron.
Right from the start, Rometron and WEED-IT have been focusing on obtaining significant savings on the use of crop protection chemicals enabling farmers and contractors to save on input costs, to eliminate weed seed banks and to maximise crop moisture availability. The technology has also proven to be crucial in minimising the risk of herbicide resistances and to help minimise the environmental impact of agriculture.
After 25 years, it is still our drive to help farmers all over the world to maximize yield while reducing the use of crop protection chemicals with our innovative spraying technology.
2024 - 25 years of Rometron and WEED-IT
This year Rometron celebrates its 25th birthday. With a quarter-century of passion for technology and a focus on impactful products, WEED-IT stands as the most accurate precision spraying system in the world.
2021 - 10.000 WEED-IT Quadro’s sold
Another milestone in the history of WEED-IT. This makes it the best-selling optical spot spraying system in the world!
2019 - Introduction WEED-IT Quadro
Better, faster, more accurateWEED-IT Quadro incorporates 10 years of worldwide experience with the WEED-IT Ag system. Quadro refers to the four detection zones of every WEED-IT detection sensor, each accounting for 25 cm (10 inches) of the entire spray boom width. The extra small zones with improved optics make sure the system never misses any weed.
2018 - Rometron is expanding
Increasing demand and expanding exports are causing Rometron to outgrow its current facilities. The company aims to maintain full control over the entire process, from development to production.
2016 - 10.000 WEED-IT Ag sensors sold
In December 2016, the 10,000th WEED-IT first generation sensor was sold.
2012 - WEED-IT goes global
After the success in Australia, demand for WEED-IT is emerging from various parts of the world. Since 2012, exports have expanded to Argentina, Canada, Brazil, the USA, Uruguay, Paraguay, Chile, Russia, Kazakhstan, Guatemala and South Africa.
2011 - Headquarter in Steenderen
Rometron is experiencing rapid growth, with WEED-IT proving to be a valued precision spray system. The company settles into a new, state-of-the-art facility where development, engineering, and production converge seamlessly.
2009 - First export of WEED-IT Ag
A new opportunity arose; the increasing demand for efficient and cost-effective weed management in agriculture. The detection technology was further developed for agricultural use starting in 2009; the WEED-IT Ag was born.WEED-IT crossed national borders and shifted its focus towards farmers. Australia was the first country where WEED-IT was successfully introduced.
2006 - WEED-IT MK-II system
In 2006, the successor of WEED-IT MK-I, the WEED-IT MK-II system was developed. The performance and effectiveness of the chlorophyll weed detection technology was improved significantly, resulting in far higher savings on herbicide usage. Furthermore, curve control and Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) were integrated in the sensing technology.
1999 - The first generation of WEED-IT
After completing his studies, Roel founded the company Rometron while putting the finishing touches on the first generation of WEED-IT;the WEED-IT MK-I. This selective spraying system was developed to efficiently control weeds on pavements, roads and city squares.
1997 - The roots of Rometron and WEED-IT
Rometrons and WEED-ITs roots lay in Wageningen, The Netherlands, where its founder and owner Roel de Jonge graduated on spot spraying technology from Wageningen University and Research (WUR) in 1997.
