From broadacre farms in Australia to research plots in Canada. This is how growers use WEED-IT precision spraying in the field, and what it saves them.

Field records and independent research that show what spot spraying does on a working farm.
Western Canada | Pre-seed, post-harvest and desiccation, 2018 to 2023
51,524

$155,100
documented chemical savings
139,600
gallons of water saved
$7.58
savings per acre in 2023
Savings grew as the colonies moved from conservative settings during early adoption to post-harvest and desiccation passes, where green targets are clearly defined. Using less water also meant fewer refills and fewer tender trips in tight spray windows.
Vermilion, Alberta, Canada | Pre-burn trials in canola, 2023 and 2024
| Spray type | Herbicide cost ($/ac) | Avg. yield (bu/ac) |
|---|---|---|
| Blanket | $15.89 | 43.88 |
| Dual (blanket + spot) | $17.08 | 43.02 |
| Spot (green on brown) | $2.38 | 46.02 |
Spot spraying cost $2.38 per acre against $15.89 for a blanket pass. Average yield was also 5% higher than with blanket spraying and 7% higher than with dual spraying.

Growers from Australia, North America and Brazil on how they use WEED-IT.

WEED-IT retrofitted on a trailed Goldacres sprayer
“We saved a few thousand dollars’ worth of Roundup pretty quick, just on the first job. I came back and told Julia, ‘That’s three grand saved for the day,’ and I think she was pretty happy with that!” (Craig)
“One of the benefits we hadn’t really considered was refilling less often and the time saving that brings.” (Julia)
“With the turn compensation and everything else, it’s something we’ll be able to use 12 months of the year, not just as a summer brown-out machine.” (Craig)

16,000 hectares | SwarmBot with a 24 metre WEED-IT boom
“In a month and a half this combination has sprayed 12,000 hectares without major problems. With spot spraying we went from 2 litres of herbicide per hectare to 0.15 litres per hectare. Our glyphosate costs have dropped to 1.20 Australian dollars per hectare. Financially, blanket spraying herbicides is simply not viable for us.”

“Before using WEED-IT, speeds of around 36 km/h were common. However, in comparison with driving a WEED-IT system at 17 km/h under these conditions, the total spraying time was equal for the same paddock size. This is due to a lower number of refill moments when using WEED-IT. Currently, we use 10% of the chemical of what we would normally use doing a blanket spray.”

“We mainly use the WEED-IT system to frequently spray for Feathertop grass and other tough weeds and to spray fungicides. Because of the dust and extreme dry air, correct and adequate positioning of the spray is a higher priority than savings. Nonetheless, 85% savings are reached under these circumstances.”

Fletcher grows cotton, barley, wheat and sorghum. His toolbar goes from idle to ready to spray in about an hour, and he finds it easy to use. To be safe he runs sensitivity mode 2 with a 200 mm margin, and still saves more than 95% on chemicals.

Rob sprays wheat and sheep fodder paddocks with a WEED-IT ground glider at 14 to 16 km/h. He mostly runs sensitivity level 3 and checks every nozzle before he starts. His average saving is around 80%, with thistles as his toughest target.

“Using herbicides to blanket spray the fields, the operational costs are very high. Using the WEEDit system, we only apply 20% to 30% of chemical in comparison with blanket spraying. We are able to work with the required rate to solve the problem, but at much lower costs.”

“I used just 25 litres of chemical spot-spraying, compared to 1000 litres if I had sprayed it conventionally. There are huge savings to be made.”

“It means we don’t have to be on the paddock immediately. WEED-IT provides flexibility to hold off spraying for a short period and target the weeds at ideal times. WEED-IT allows us to strategically manage paddocks when controlling Feathertop grass.”
More flexible spray timing
Crooble, New South Wales, Australia
“WEED-IT is the only economical way to apply the rates needed to kill weeds that have become more tolerant to the rates we used in the past. We’re pleased with the reduction in chemical usage!”

“The money we are saving isn’t our main goal. We’re also looking at it from an environmental point of view. The less chemicals going out, the better.”

“It caught my attention because the technology was battling very small sizes of weed, and by the look of it, it was very effective. That’s the point where I put the pencil on paper and started calculating my return on investment.”
